I know! It’s not Jan 1 yet. But I just couldn’t wait to post my goals for next year. Obviously the biggie is the marathon, but I think after I finish (hopefully!) that I want to work on speed a little bit. I’m pretty confident that I can achieve these goals, but I think they’re challenging enough for me that I will have to work pretty hard on them.
I think the best part of being a fairly “new” runner (began in March 09) is that I can realistically expect to PR in every distance in 2010 :)
Do you set goals for each year of running? Or do you play things by ear? Leave a comment!
Racing Goals
- Complete my first marathon on March 20 2010 at the National Marathon in DC
- Run a 10k in 52:49 (8:30 pace)
- Run a 5k in 24:51 (8:00 pace)
- Run a mile in 6:45
Strength Goals
- Do upper body / core workouts 20 min 3x a week – if I can do this for 4 weeks I will register for a half marathon as a reward!
- Complete the 100 pushups challenge
Other Goals
- Participate in a relay – seriously how fun would this be? I’m really hoping to get together a team from my local trail running club to do one of the local fall relays.
- Volunteer at a race

Nice blog – I love your layout!
Speedy goals for 2010, too – very awesome. looks like your marathon training is progressing beautifully.
Those are great goals Kate. I too think a relay race would be fun. I have never volunteered at a race, so I may add that for my 2010 goal as well. Happy training! =)
Nice set of goals there, kiddo. I like that they are somewhat diverse. Good luck. We’ll be pulling for you!
Running goals are good. Definitely have running goals because after all, our sport involves going over a finish line as fast as you can. So there!
You got some nice ones going for next year. I wish you lots of luck!
The early years of running races are great. PR after PR. Good luck on your 2010 goals. Run well and drink well. Cheers!
Hi — thanks for your comment!
You should definitely do the cans for comments thing. No need to wait for my drive to finish! I learned about it from another blogger. I think there are a bunch of bloggers doing it. Go for it!
I like your 2010 goals! Good luck !
Hi, I like your site! I came across it googling “2010 Running Goals.”
Yes, I like goals; they help one stay focused, and publishing them publicly makes one feel accountable for their accomplishment. I started running intermittently in 2005, and seriously in 2008. My 2009 goal was 1,000 miles. My 2010 goals include running a marathon (May 1) and running 1,500 miles.
BTW, I’m doing the 100 Pushup Challenge, too (not in my goals); currently in Wk 4. It’s tough!
Good luck on your marathon!
Thank you so much, there aren’t enough posts on this… or at least i cant find them. I am turning into such a blog nut, I just cant get enough and this is such an important topic… i’ll be sure to write something about your site
